Instead of going to my 10 o’clock I went to the Immigration office and was back for my 11 o’clock with a new tourist card.  Copied music – Saw about the robbery in the newspaper “Excelsior” Aside from misspelling our names, getting the wrong address and quoting the wrong things stolen (for Jean) the article was Interesting!’

The Republican tanker Campeador was sunk off Tunis by Italian destroyers. 28 members of the crew were saved but 12 were lost.

An Eastern Air Lines Douglas DC-2 struck a power pole while taking off from Daytona Beach Airport. Both crew members and 2 of the 7 passengers aboard were killed.

Went to school but was excused from 12 o’clock to go to town to see about my ticket. Nat’l RR would do nothing about it.  Went in the afternoon to see Ms. Pacifia and they are to write San Antonio about it.  Went to school and Miss Stephensen wrote a letter for me to the Dept of immigration for another tourist card.  Was raining so hard that I didn’t stop at the Immigration office. Doped up for a cold! Copied music.

It was announced in Berlin that The Times correspondent Norman Ebbutt had been ordered out of Germany. The move was made in retaliation for Britain expelling three German journalists on suspicion of espionage.

Anpit 10:30 or so I missed my middle-sized boy and we began t realize we’d been robbed. That had contained everything of importance I had – my ticket, my tourist card, my check book, 200 pesos in 20 peso bills, my new zarape and the gift I had bought for Marjorie D. Bagwell!  Everything gone!!  besides my blue suit coat with the gray fur! Jan lost a dress and her cloth purse but only a toston in money!  We went to the police office and they came to the house.  Then a man came to investigate who told us the “Levantar un acta” or file a complaint.  I guess. I don’t hope to see the money again but perhaps the tourist card and my ticket can be recovered!

3,000 Japanese soldiers conspicuously entered Beiping without resistance. Japanese warplanes dropped propaganda leaflets on the populace proclaiming that the “Japanese army has driven out your wicked rulers and their wicked armies and will keep them out.

The 1937 Monaco Grand Prix was a Grand Prix motor race takes place. The first five places were won by the German entrees of Mercedes or Auto Union in the cars that came to be known as the Silver Arrows.

Long program by students of dancing and singing classes. Bought Spanish or Mexican cookbook. Jean was in one dance and got a basket of flowers.

In Little Rock, Arkansas, the newly formed Society for the Booing of Commercial Advertisements in Motion Picture Theatres made its debut, booing loudly when corporate advertising appeared on the movie screen. Similar “booing clubs” soon began springing up elsewhere. In the 1930s and ’40s movie houses experimented with running ads for commercial products alongside movie trailers, but many theatre-goers resented the practice because, unlike the radio where ads were recognized as necessary, movies were not free.

Got A on an Economics paper and she congratulated me on my Spanish!  Was I thrilled? Yes! Card from Irene Swann says she is starting to Mexico with Hazel Hansen. they probably will get here Tomorrow. Clever letter from Lenore. I’m lazy. I should study but I can’t get myself going for some reason or other.  I have so much to tell Arnold and it is so hard to write all of it in a letter.

Slept Late – 1st day of August, My last month here!  I can hardly wait for the next 18 days to pass until I meet my one and only in San Antonio.  Jean went to a bullfight with Crosby Somebody while I stayed home and knitted!  Sure do sound domestic. Went to the opera Image result for "Manon' at Night 1937 opera mexico city“Manon’ at Night” the leading lady was very good, but the poor tenor could hardly be heard. Vincent Rousseau whom we met on the train came and sat with us or I’d have been bored to tears.  Told us many interesting items of his visit here so far.  He was down to his last 3 centavos! When we got home I found I’d left the key in my room so we had to get Mr. Ruiz out of bed to let us in.  Same on us!
