A Junkers Ju 52 aircraft flying from Cologne to London crashed in Ostend, Belgium, killing all 11 aboard including the Duke and Duchess of Hesse.

British MPs voted to build air-raid shelters in most of Britain’s towns and cities.

Image result for Robert Hodgson 1937The British government announced the appointment of Robert Hodgson as agent to the Franco regime in Burgos. Although this fell short of diplomatic recognition, it was a form of de facto recognition that was a diplomatic coup for the Franco government.

Instead of going to my 10 o’clock I went to the Immigration office and was back for my 11 o’clock with a new tourist card.  Copied music – Saw about the robbery in the newspaper “Excelsior” Aside from misspelling our names, getting the wrong address and quoting the wrong things stolen (for Jean) the article was Interesting!’

The Republican tanker Campeador was sunk off Tunis by Italian destroyers. 28 members of the crew were saved but 12 were lost.

FlagThe Regional Defence Council of Aragon was dissolved.

An Eastern Air Lines Douglas DC-2 struck a power pole while taking off from Daytona Beach Airport. Both crew members and 2 of the 7 passengers aboard were killed.

Italy and Yugoslavia signed a five-year non-aggression and neutrality pact. Yugoslavia recognized Ethiopia as Italian territory while Italy made trade concessions and granted language and school rights for its Yugoslav minority.

Last night there was a party at the annex and we played “Hookey”  They took it fairly well after they caught on – went to El Paso today and heard the El Paso Symphony with a sporano soloist tonight – Very nice program.  They didn’t play any of my particular favorites but did as well as I’d ever heard them.

United Airlines Trip 34: A United Air Lines Boeing 247 crashed into a hill south of Newhall, California during rainy weather, killing all 12 aboard.

 

 

 

The Spanish government decided to hold the Palos despite a German threat of reprisals.

Mahatma Gandhi emerged from two years of silence to make a political speech. He cryptically said, “Show me the way and I am prepared to return to gaol. I am prepared to be hanged. If you do all I want you to do, the Viceroy will say: ‘I am wrong – I thought you people were terrorists, and if you like we Britishers will return by the next steamer.’ We would then say to Lord Linlithgow and the British: ‘India is big enough to hold you and more like you.’ That is my Swaraj.” Gandhi denied that his speech indicated that he was returning to public life.
