Had letter from both places in L.A. Matson won’t do. Lenore came up in P.M. Alyce Claire and I played tennis for over an hour (from 10:30 to 12:15) then found Lenore waiting when we got back. Shopped a little and watched crowds. Went to Wolfe’s with Lenore at night. Played Pitch until 11:00 then they rolled up the rugs and we danced everything. Virginia Reel, Polka, Watty, Little Shoe, Schotische (?) and had the grandest time this year. Got home at 1:30. Sam Sherman bumped up against me during the first Virginia Reel and broke my glasses! More poor luck!

On George Washington‘s 204th birthday, retired baseball legend Walter Johnson replicated a feat attributed to Washington by throwing a silver dollar across the Rappahannock River. Though it remained in dispute whether Washington ever did such a thing, Johnson did prove that it could be done.

Nazi Germany established quotas for Jewish doctors. The decree by Gerhard Wagner stated that the proportion of Jewish doctors in Germany could not exceed the proportion of Jews in the country’s general population

Letter from Salt Lake Public Schools – Am going to answer it soon. Took another long walk today with Alyce Claire. This time Mary went along. Got food card at Cafeteria. Wrote several days ago to the Matson Steamship line in Los Angeles about routes and prices. Also wrote to L.A. Chamber of Commerce about other steamship offices. Ty-Ty says Dad is planning to be here the 25th for two days. Surely hope he can make it this time.

Saw “Alice Adams” with Katherine Hepburn and can frankly say I never saw a more depressing picture! The acting was well done but I don’t care for that kind of story even if it is true to life!

German Film Maker Leni Riefenstahl is on the cover of this week’s Time Magazine.

Paraguayan President Eusebio Ayala was overthrown in a coup led by Rafael Franco.

In Geneva, the League of Nations moved to its new headquarters, the Palace of Nations.

After several years of a trade war, the British and Irish government signed a pact reducing tariffs between the two countries.

The U.S. Supreme Court decided Ashwander v. Tennessee Valley Authority and Brown v. Mississippi.

The comic strip The Phantom made its first appearance. Although the Phantom character did not have any superpowers, he was the first to wear a skintight unitard-style costume, the hallmark of many comic book superheroes to come.

Took my class to the Mexican Church where each had a part. Found out that Dad wrote Mr. Garcia he was coming the 28th of February. Wish he would write me to that effect – Found cake from the Palmer’s when I got home from church.

Valentines’s Day! Only one comic Valentine this year instead of two – and that from C.J. White. The home room party went off in the Band Room. I think they enjoyed it more than the other. We had sandwiches and pop. (Coca-Cola) Home before 10 – Dramatic club party postponed. Saw Rev. Garcia yesterday about taking my girls over on Sunday. Hope they plan something nice.

Here’s what else was happening 80-years-ago today

Charles Maurras published a column in Action Française calling for “the knife” to be used against politicians who supported sanctions against Italy. That same day, French politician Léon Blum was attacked and cut about the head by student followers of Maurras.

That night, the French government banned the Action Française, Camelots du Roi and Royalist Students’ Association under the law passed in December prohibiting extremist political leagues

Alyce Claire back again after missing a day and a half. The S.S. party went off at Adele Green’s. I borrowed A.C’s car and was glad to have it. Only one other care for 14 people. I gave red sweet pea favors to all the ones who came. Home by 10:30

The 1936 North American cold wave becomes stronger breaking numerous records and crippling transportation services. Wind chills in some locations were near −100 °F

A committee of experts reported to the League of Nations that an oil embargo against Italy would take three and a half months to become effective, and even that would only be if the United States agreed to curtail its booming oil business with Italy.

Alyce Claire missed all afternoon – has an awful cold! Saw Mrs. Wolf and Head of Wanda’s baby born Dec 30. Got a new dress a’la redigate from BonTon for $4.90 – Dark blue with bright print. With black or white twill be good. I have 3 parties planned. Wed for S.S. class, Thursday for Dramatic club and Friday for home room. Hope one of them anyway, won’t materialize. Too much of a good thing!

The Battle of Amba Aradam began on the northern front in Ethiopia.

The Nazi Reichstag passed the ‘Gestapo Law’ which included the following paragraph: “Neither the instructions nor the affairs of the Gestapo will be open to review by the administrative courts.” This meant the Gestapo was now above the law and there could be no legal appeal regarding anything it did.
