About Shanna Vicker

I was lucky enough to be a part of my Grandmother Elizabeth Carsey's last 40 years. We played countless card games, read books, played dress-up and many other games at her house. My family spent almost every holiday with her and Grandpa (until his death in 1985.) She was loved by the entire neighborhood and was often referred to as the Neighborhood Grandma. I held a special pride in the fact that I could call her mine! Through her simplicity, she taught me the basics of life and the things which make you happy. Love your family, your church and music. The only thing worth crying over is beautiful music. And above all else, approach life with a sense of humor. I have done my best to live up to her expectations and pass those lessons onto my children.

Met Carsey, Marta, Betty and Emma Lou at school at 12:00 – Skipped my 12 o’clock class and went with them to San Juan flower market and to lunch. Wire from Dad (time?) saying he hadn’t heard from me –  I wired him a note. Saw “Regards al Sol” with Carsey – They changed 2nd act from Colonial Maya to Mining – Very Good

We went to Chapultepec Park – saw the Dan Quixote fountains and listened to a half-hour concert by the Arguenta Typica.    Started to sprinkle so we started for home.  This certainly is a quiet Fourth of July.

San Angel Inn

I washed my hair and it took until noon to dry even though it was a sunny morning!  In the PM we went to San Angel. It was raining hard before we got off the street car so we made a dash for the convent and stayed until it stopped.  Saw the mummies n everything and bought some pictures. A little boy took us to the Pedrazal and the Cuarto del Secreto but it was so wet around the latter that we didn’t try it out.  Went to San Angel Inn and Jean treated me to some coffee.   We had chocolate.  She took some pictures of Convent patio and of D. Rivera’s house.  At supper Ruiz’s were eating out and Arturo & Luz Maria came over and talked to us of ranch life.

Went to school at 10:30 and registered. Saw Frances. Met Elda Springer who has been here a week and sick most of the time!  Poor child, We took her to show her rooms and she decided on 46 Naranjo just around the corner from school. Must mail the letter to the bank. The note for $150 was waiting for me when I arrived!  Jean Crawford (Colo Springs) has decided to stay with me here so we moved upstairs tonight. Saw “Rayado Del Sol” at the Palacio de Bellas Artes by Roberto Sosto. The most gorgeous elaborate settings I ever saw as a background for native songs and dance from Jalio, Michoacan and the penninsula.  The colors were so vivid that my eyes began aching before it was over! I am taking 4 courses = Mex Lit with Junez Ruida, Latin Literature under Pimentel, Educ Problems in Mexico under Palma and Commerce between Span-Am and US under Durand. Sounds interesting and I have nothing at eight 0 clock!  We get cute little folders containing our picture on the registration card. Mrs. Ruiz is learning, or rather studying, Eng.  He has been to class twice!  but speaks it rather well at that.  We have fun talking both languages at the table.

Got here this morning at 1 am!! The Ruizes had waited at the station since 11.  They took Jean Howe with me because she had no place to stay and we could not look for a room then.  They are so nice to me! I have a tiny room and a laboratory facing the back patio.  I like it very much. Looked at one room for Jean which was in a nice home but cost 120 pesos a month! Bought tickets for a show at El Palacio de Bellas Artes tomorrow and went to La Cartagena (neighborhood theater) to see “Alla’ en el Rancho Grande” a Mex Production. Very good. A second feature was “Dr. Socretes” with Paul Muni – Only Fair. Saw Mrs. Ruiz’s father and sisters and brother. Mr. Ruiz’s mother is here for a few days until her house is finished.  The baby, Bernardo is precious but none of the three children resemble each other – I am afraid that Ramoncito is still my Favorite! Jean is now doing exercises on the floor – so energetic.  It has rained nearly all afternoon and night!

Thought I’d leave for Laredo at 8:30 am but as the 4:45 made better connections I just waited. Met Frances Neville, also Mex bound, so we walked over town together – Visited Joske’s Store – Sat in the Gunter Lounge and listened to an orchestra broadcast luncheon music. Very good – Got the 4:45 and met two people there. Vincent Rousseau from North Carolina and  Jean Crawford from Colorado Springs. We went all the way together. The trip would have been terrible without their company. They scenery is boring! So different from the beautiful green around San Antonio!
