We arrived late everywhere – At Guerrero I asked about opals and was besieged with agate and poor opals.   They were not happy when I bought nothing!!

Here’s what else was happening 80-years-ago today:

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Jr. and Ethel du Pont were married in Wilmington, Delaware in the American society wedding of the decade.

German Reichminister of Church Affairs Hanns Kerrl decreed state control of Protestant church funds. The government now controlled all aspects of the churches’ financial activities, right down to ministers’ salaries.

Portugal stopped co-operating with the Non-Intervention Committee patrol agreement and ordered British observers off its soil.

Got chiffon ruching  on morning mail! A record I say! Helped dad mend roof on back porch and bath but I don’t think it helped  much. Also helped (?) him fix a light over the door of the Annex. Had postponed party for May birthdays until tonight. my partner was the new chiropractor Dr. Bernard Walker. Very Nice

Dizzy Dean refused to sign a letter of apology and threatened to sue Ford Frick for $250,000

The wedding of the Duke of Windsor and Wallis Warfield was set for June 3 at the Château de Candé in Monts, France.

 

 

Outgoing Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin made the last significant speech of his time in office, in which he asked the youth of Britain to guard against the threats of fascism and communism and said that the League of Nations was of “doubtful” value.

Archbishop of Chicago George Mundelein made the paper hanger speech, attacking “malicious” Nazi propaganda against the Catholic church. Mundelein called Joseph Goebbels “crooked” and referred to Adolf Hitler as “an Austrian paper-hanger, and a poor one at that, I am told

Letter from Carsey saying he has the flu and won’t be able to come next Saturday – Darn!  I surely hope it isn’t serious but I am disappointed in his not being able to come – At the meeting tonight Mr. Deaton asked me to be a chairman .  Report card day. My room averages were low!

Greta Garbo topped the list at $332,500 ($5,824,987.41 in 2016 with inflation,) followed by Wallace Beery ($278,749), Joan Crawford ($241,403), William Powell ($238,750) and Clark Gable ($211,553).

 

The Duke of Norfolk married Lavinia Mary Strutt at Brompton Oratory in London. 5,000 women jostled each other and fought police outside the venue in an effort to get a glimpse of the proceedings
