Letter from Ty-Ty!  Went for a walk at 6 a.m!! Club today had Mr. Martin Image result for excuse it pleasetalk suposedly on the plause for the Quatro.  Centennial but he spent too much time on N.M. history, Finished reading Excuse It Please by Cornelia Otis Skinner.  Very Clever!  Also “Be Kind to Your Self” by Vash Young.  First 2 chapters fine!

Image result for Winston Churchill 1936 speechWinston Churchill gave a speech in Parliament attacking the Baldwin government for its slow response to the “unwelcome fact” of German rearmament, warning that Britain was entering a new period of danger. “The era of procrastination, of half measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close”, Churchill stated. “In its place, we are entering a period of consequences.”

The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge opened.

Housemaster cast. Seated, middle row, Kynaston Reeves as Ovington, Hilda Trevelyan as Barbara Fane, and Frederick Leister as Donkin

The comedy play Housemaster by Ian Hay premiered at the Apollo Theatre in London.

Armistice Day!  Stayed in bed until after 10 – Saw “The Ghost Goes West” with Lenore, Alyce Claire, Harriet P. and Evelyn Auyele.  Letter from Mary Jo and Dit yesterday.  No letter from Ty-Ty since I came back from Albuquerque!

The Peel Commission arrived in Palestine to investigate the causes of the recent Arab unrest and recommend solutions.

Live Entertainment and Music on Television is brought to life at the NBC RCA building in New York.

Image result for new capital in valencia 1936Spanish Prime Minister Francisco Largo Caballero and other government officials fled Madrid and set up a new capital in Valencia.Administration of Madrid was turned over to an eight-man junta led by General José Miaja.

Franco ordered a halt to the executions of Basque priests who were considered supporters of the Republic.

Richard S. Lambert won his defamation case and was awarded £7,500 by the jury.

General meeting – Hoped to hear Dr. Zimmerman on the Quarter-Centennial but Dr. Hewitt gave it instead.  Then Gov. Tingley read a talk on the “Future of Ed in New Mex”  but he doesn’t say much of anything.  Big disappointment.  I saw “Ladies in Love” in afternoon. Alyce C and I saw “San Francisco” in the evening

Went to Health section. Lahin Chairman – heard Dr. Earp, also review of “American Chamber of Horrors” by Ruby Sides and McKay on “Sex Education” – Very Good- General Meeting in the afternoon with Dr. Dearing from Indiana, as main speaker.  Fooled around and talked until late.   Janice Belle stayed with us.   We got a room right next to the Gov – and do we hear things!

The Literary Digest published the final returns in its presidential election poll, projecting Alf Landon to beat President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Landon was forecast to carry 32 states worth 370 electoral votes, 104 more than required for election. The Literary Digest poll had correctly predicted the winner of every presidential election since 1920.

In Rome, the destruction of the Spina of Borgo began to make way for the Via della Conciliazione.

Here’s what else was happening 80-years-ago today

 

Drapeau de Rex.svgThe Belgian Rexist Party announced its intention to march on Brussels in a conscious imitation of Mussolini’s March on Rome in order to “sweep out the Paul van Zeeland government and its corruption” despite a government order banning the march. Van Zeeland made a national radio address that evening appealing for calm and announcing measures that amounted to martial law.

General José Miaja was put in charge of the defence of Madrid.

The British press continued to tiptoe around the Edward VIII abdication crisis. London publication The News Week wrote that “the effects of the unofficial censorship have been disastrous, giving the impression abroad that there is something to hide.” The weekly publication Cavalcade, which had been running articles about the king and his friendship with Mrs. Simpson for weeks, ran a short notice of Simpson’s divorce suit and mentioned that thousands of words had been published in the United States about it. The Guardian ran an article about the possibility of the king’s coronation being postponed but avoided any direct explanation for why a postponement might take place
