The Duke of Windsor canceled a visit to the United States the day before he was to set sail. A statement through the Anglo-American Press Association cited “grave misconceptions” about the purpose of the trip, which was due to take place with Charles Bedaux.

30,000 Japanese troops landed virtually unopposed at Hangzhou Bay.

Germany and Poland signed a joint declaration on minorities, guaranteeing proper reciprocal treatment and protection of the Polish minority in Germany and the German minority in Poland

The Duke of Windsor and his wife met Adolf Hitler at the Berghof. As they departed Hitler made the Nazi salute, which the Duke returned.

Sent Mary Jo my wine evening dress. It is cold today.

Here’s what else was happening 80-years-ago today:

France and Yugoslavia extended their mutual assistance pact of 1927 for an additional five years.

U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave a fireside chat on the topic of legislation to be recommended to Congress.

The Duke of Windsor continues his visit to Germany. Speaking with Joseph Goebbels

The Brady Shoot-out took place in Bangor, Maine. Two members of the Brady Gang were killed. The third apprehended.

Arnold ate lunch with me.  We got my picture proofs.  He selected his and met Mrs. Morris.  I almost wept when he left but I couldn’t go to school that way!  Surely, hated to see him off without me! How is it that I love him now so much more than just last week, but I do! Charlotte missed school and we went to see her and stayed for the  “usual” coffee and home-made bread. Delicious!

The Duke of Windsor and his wife began a visit to Nazi Germany, arriving in Berlin by train from Paris. The duke was taken on a tour of a factory by German Labour Front leader Robert Ley.

Charles Lindbergh and wife Anne began their second visit to Nazi Germany. Over the next two weeks Colonel Lindbergh would be shown the Focke-WulfHenschel and Daimler-Benz factories and permitted to examine the Dornier Do 17 bomber and Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighter.

The steamship Mar Cantabrico, carrying war materiel from the United States to the Spanish Republic, was intercepted in the Bay of Biscay by the Nationalists who shot 26 members of the crew.
