Here’s what else was happening 80-years-ago today

 

Paul Robeson made an important speech on the Spanish Civil War at the Royal Albert Hall in London during a benefit to raise funds for Basque refugee children. “There is no standing above the conflict on Olympian heights. There are no impartial observers”, Robeson said. “The liberation of Spain from the oppression of fascist reactionaries is not a private matter of the Spaniards, but the common cause of all advanced and progressive humanity.”

The British press observed an unofficial policy of self-censorship and refrained from publishing reports of Mrs. Simpson’s divorce proceedings. In the United States the story was front page news. The story was also reported freely in France, but the news was completely suppressed in Germany, Italy, Russia, Greece and the British Colonies.

diary 2Joyce has been quite sick but today she ate lunch with us at Goody’s.  I played Monopoly with Bernard at Stone’s last night and enjoyed it thoroughly.  Plan to play again tonight.  Last day of classwork today. Tomorrow exams begin.

President and Mrs. Roosevelt entertain disabled veterans at garden party

During his annual message to Congress, Chilean President Arturo Alessandri hinted that Chile may withdraw from the League of Nations if it was not reorganized. “The great day of open diplomacy has not arrived”, Alessandri said. “There has been no reduction of armaments. The political conveniences of the great powers have prevailed over the principles of the Covenant. The League’s peace machinery is ineffective and 15 years of experience have shown that it requires fundamental revision.” Alessandri mentioned unspecified “other measures” that would be taken if this revision did not happen

Harold and Jaime work today too.  We talked until time for lunch.  Ate at Watter’s then I had to meet Lenora at the Aunt Joyce’s.  Left El Paso about 2 P.M. Got home at 8 – Ate supper and so to bed!

Pennsy train #NL-1 derailed about 25 cars in downtown Plymouth, Indiana.  Luckily, no one was injured.

Legislative elections were held in France, with run-off elections to be held the following week. The left-wing coalition known as the Popular Front did even better than expected and looked poised to take power.

 

The final Italian drive on the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa, immortalized in Fascist propaganda as the March of the Iron Will, began.

 

The third annual Rose Sunday was observed by 20,000 people at the Morcom Rose Garden in Oakland, California to view the blooms and hear a concert.

Went to Hagerman for 2nd Sunday meeting of the League –  Hazel Hanson and “Shorty” Miller were there through not together – I went with Johnston’s!

Babe Ruth played his final game as a Yankee, going 0-for-3 at Griffith Stadium in Washington during a 5-3 loss to the Senators.

and Today was the day to Fall Back for Daylight Savings Time.

Nazi Germany ordered workers under 25 years of age to surrender their jobs to older unemployed men, especially fathers of large families. All employers would be required to submit reports to the labour office divulging the number of workers they employ under the age of 25 and what measures they would be taking to replace them
