Had to go to Junior Dept. to talk on Mexico during S.S. hour. Played for church.  Bernard came by to go to Band Concert in which Rev Hempstead and Veronica Rhea sang the “Minere” Rode around until time for Junior League at 5:30.  Told them of the Pyramids and the Festival there.  Got a sandwichat Mosely’s and back to church.  After taking Mrs. Johnston home we went to Velma’s. It rained a trifle. Met her sister Vera from near Clovis.  Pete, Velma, B and I rode around in the rain.   I saw a lot of country today!  Lovely day all around

Joe DiMaggio made his major league debut with the New York Yankees, going 3-for-6 with a triple during a 14-5 win over the St. Louis Browns.

Harold and Jaime work today too.  We talked until time for lunch.  Ate at Watter’s then I had to meet Lenora at the Aunt Joyce’s.  Left El Paso about 2 P.M. Got home at 8 – Ate supper and so to bed!

Here’s what else was happening 80-years-ago today

Pennsy train #NL-1 derailed about 25 cars in downtown Plymouth, Indiana.  Luckily, no one was injured.

Legislative elections were held in France, with run-off elections to be held the following week. The left-wing coalition known as the Popular Front did even better than expected and looked poised to take power.

 

The final Italian drive on the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa, immortalized in Fascist propaganda as the March of the Iron Will, began.

 

The third annual Rose Sunday was observed by 20,000 people at the Morcom Rose Garden in Oakland, California to view the blooms and hear a concert.

Here’s what else was happening 80-years-ago today

 

99 percent of German voters turned out for parliamentary elections.  Voters were asked whether they approved of the occupation of the Rhineland and a single party list for the new Reichstag.

In a publicity stunt, a handful of voters were packed aboard the airships Graf Zeppelin and Hindenburg, which flew above the Rhineland as those aboard cast their ballots.

Two large squadrons of Italian bombers pounded Harar for two and a half hours, setting the city ablaze. Ethiopian Red Cross and Egyptian Red Crescent hospitals were also bombed despite being clearly marked and set off some distance from the city

The cold returns to the North East.  An ice storm freezes  Alfred, New York

The so-called “Mad Butcher” terrorizes Cleveland after the dismembered body of a 42-year-old woman in a basket and several burlap sacks were discovered. The 42-year-old woman was the third victim in 18 months to be found dismembered with precision.

Parliamentary elections were held in Greece, won by the Liberal Party.

The Continental Divide Trail becomes an idea.
