Churubusco Gardens

Went to church at Gante with Carsey – The service lasted from 11:30 until 1:15!!  We were to meet Betty at the Park at 1:00 but knew it would be too late.  She met us later downtown – Ate dinner downtown and when I called Mrs. Ruiz she said I had money $30 came from the family but Betty had notice of $70 bonus deposited so I guess I won’t need the $30 – I’ll probably have $75.  Ojala.  We three went to Churubusco.  It is as pretty as ever and has the most beautiful gardens in all Mexico – We got back just in time to be 1/2 hour late for waffles at Davis.’  However Mrs. Davis had not come home as our lateness didn’t matter. Got the piece of music “Amapole del Camino” (poppy road) that I had left Ethelyn a peso for last year! She Betty are both Alpha Delta Pi’s.

Slept about 6 hours, in bed until 2:30,  Carsey came later, about 5 and we saw “Private Worlds”   and ” Love in Bloom Both rather good. In spite of the fact that we went into the show no later than 6 and came straight home, it was ten o’clock when I got there!   Must have been a very long show!  Wrote the history paper for Velasquez.

At 11:20 thinking the teachers weren’t coming, Carsey and I went to the museum to look over the “Headdress” for my paper in Art Class.  Tried to find Abelards Rodriguez Market but merely found where it was not!  Carsey came to lunch at Ruiz’s. Latter he and I went to Chapultepec Castle and I think saw every room.  Saw the roof garden and inner rooms upstairs.  Even sat in some of the chairs!  The guide knew English and as usual was eager to talk – It was too cloudy to see Papa!  He left me at Chapultepec to see about getting a ticket to the dinner – dance tonight.   Left at 9 for the Swiss Club with Betty and James.   Very nice time – Stayed till four and then rode to Xochimileo and back to the see the sun rise.  Ate tacos and fruit in Tacubaya for ‘breakfast’ – Carsey was lucky about not having to pay for the dinner.  He kept talking about Vera Cruz (a beautiful dream!) and his maroon colored Chevrolet Coupe that he is going to buy.

Carey came to school at ten looking as well in some ways and better than when he left.  He went to my 10 and 11 o’clock classes with me.  At 12 we went to the Normal School which is not so far, towards Tacuba.  In the library someone was trying to play a victrola while nogohalf of the students clapped and half hissed!  The Science Lab (above the library) was rather interesting – Betty joined us for lunch, James sat down but didn’t stay – Wilhelm came in as we were through and stayed to go to the program with us.  We stayed after the program and Carsey danced! Sat out very few numbers -Wilhelm doesn’t dance and James took his “Mexican” teacher (18 years old!) so Betty didn’t dance much.  (Wilhelm re-rented Carsey’s room)  It rained and we argued whether or not to go tomorrow to Vera Cruz in the morning – Walked to town (Bought some “helotes” mmmm) for Betty’s pictures and took car home – Letter from Ty-Ty awaited me saying they could send no money, and treating the matter very lightly! I told Carsey I can’t go anywhere.

line

A letter from Carsey – as Mrs. Ruiz says “Sabe que todania esta vivo” ( I know today he is alive) He won’t be back until today or tomorrow!  Three weeks – long time!  I am surely glad to hear from him though I was certain he could come back “home” in a shorter length of time!  Went to the glass factory at Carretons #5 – Didn’t find anything to our liking at our price so we returned empty-handed. Porfirio Gonzalez called at noon to tell me that he was exceptionally busy!  and didn’t know when he could ask for  a date but that he was going to call every noon-day!  He has the biggest line I’ve heard in  a long time.  Regular flatterer too!

In Hollywood, California Dr. Ralph Willard, a doctor who came from the state of Georgia in Russia, has successfully frozen a monkey named Jekal and brought it back to life. The doctor has also frozen guinea pigs and resuscitated them. However, when he wanted to experiment on dogs howls of protest came from humane societies.

In Europe, riots broke out in the French cities of Paris, Le Havre and Brest in protest of government economic measures. The mayor of the German spa town of Bad Tölz ordered all Jews to leave within 24 hours. A Jewish owned-hotel was closed by police to “protect it”.  Italy called 75,000 more men to arms.

Went to Tepoztlan but Ethlyn did not go.

The church is all there is to see and it has not been so many years since it was abandoned.  The facade is beautiful, of cream colored stone beautifully carved a la Churrigueresque ? I believe – The towers are real works of art with all the carvings and battlemast looking spires around the towers.  It has a immense altar covered with gold leaf and five or six smaller alters also gold-leafed.  One chapel is built in the same shape at the room of Mary’s when the angel told her of the coming birth of Jesus – The convent by it (Jesuit) is immense too and many of the paintings (murals and oil canvases) still remain.   If the place were cared for, cleaned and polished, it wold be a real museum.  The friend of Mrs. Ruiz’s had two other guests, Carmelita (?) and Elena Gomez besides her sister whom they called Chata, herself (Emma Moctegnoma) and me.  We got something to eat that looked like unrolled tacos  (got canitas a piece of roast or better barbeque) spread with chili etc.  Quite good.  The ride back and forth is through pretty green  fields with trees and mountains everywhere visible – Surely enjoyed it – Left about 10:30 and got back in battletime for dinner – In the afternoon I called Mrs. Ochos for the last time I am sure – She had heard nothing from Carsey and had given the letter for him, as I understand her, to the fellow who rented his room but his clothes are still there. I certainly can’t explain why he hasn’t written to her at least and why he hasn’t come for his things.  It is really no business of mine where e is or what he has done but I’d like to know for my own personal satisfaction and I think he is treating Mrs. Ochoa terribly —

Cashed some money wrote letters and a paper for Nova’s lit class on “La Celestina” in the morning.  I am determined to find out about the Davis’.  Finally found they live on Avenida Veracruz 56 apts 4 and after some search found it.  They had invited some of the missionaries to tea so I stayed.  Dr. Hauser described a Catholic Church Wedding that he had attended.  Ethelyn is going back for her work on her Master’s next year.   She surely is ambitious!  She got a scholarship for her tuition.  She and I are planniing to go tomorrow to Tepozotlan with a friend of Mrs. Ruiz’s who is wild to talk English with someone.  Am rather looking forward to it.

Slept until 8:30 almost. Letter from family – Learned “La Mirimba” in music.  Late hours and school the next day certainly don’t seem to agree with me.  I am so tired today I can hardly navigate .niceMy back hurts and I think it came from dancing with Porfirio who is so short – He has just called me and is nice!
