Joseph Stalin responded to rumors that he was dead by releasing a handwritten note that read: “I know from reports of the foreign press that I long ago abandoned this sinful world and moved into the other world. As one cannot doubt such foreign press dispatches unless he wants to be expelled from the list of civilized people, I request you to believe them and don’t disturb me in the calm of the other world. With respect, J. Stalin

Boulder Dam began generating electricity and Tens of thousands of people jammed the parade route on Broadway in Los Angeles as the street became ablaze with light

 

The European committee on neutrality in the Spanish Civil War met in London with representatives of 27 nations present. Many accusations were flung back and forth but no concrete proposals on how to resolve them were offered, and the meeting adjourned with no date set for another meeting.

Uruguay broke off diplomatic relations with Spain because of reported executions of three sisters of a Uruguayan diplomat.

Benito Mussolini received Hitler Youth leader Baldur von Schirach in Rome. A special parade of visiting Hitler Youth was conducted in the Piazza Venezia.

Dad’s Birthday!

Wore my new coat to S.S. and church. Slept nearly all afternoon and evening. I must be getting sleeping sickness.   Woke at 6 and did the usual weekly wash and ironing.  Went to back to sleep!

German Minister of Postal Affairs Paul Freiherr von Eltz-Rübenach opened the first videophone conversation.

 

 

 

The Hoover Dam is Complete.  More than 5,000 people were employed by six Companies to construct the dam. Construction began in 1931 and over 100 workers died.

The SS California strike began in San Pedro, California.

Legislative elections were held in Argentina. The National Democratic Party remained the largest faction with 55 of 158 seats.
