(This is an entry from the journal entitled “Mexico Summer” written by Elizabeth Whipple Lancaster Carsey 80-years-ago)

Taught my girls for the first time. Jeanne Marsh, Adele Green, Marjorie Scannell, Eizabeth Loller and Martha White are regular members and Vernice Rinehart is joining the class.   Oh yes, Ginger McCune is a member but she has never come!  Went with Mary to the Christian Science Church and enjoyed it for its novelty.   The songs were entirely different and the sermon was readings from the Bible and Mary Baker Eddy – Miss Garrett is the soloist – A good many things that were read were a little beyond me.  I can’t swallow the interpretation of one woman as they can – They have a pretty church building surrounded by a large lawn and shrubs.  Still no word from Dad.  Am anxious to see Mrs. Martens when she returns.::  She called later to say that Dad was returned as was Dr. Linebaugh, but Hightower comes as presiding elder. Ty-Ty was at Conference today!  Had a chance to ride up with someone.  Mary Jo was also there for a day or so!  Wish I could hear from home!

Here’s what else was happening 80-years-ago today:

Two branch offices of the First Wisconsin National Bank were bombed in the second of a series of four  terror attacks involving bombs in Milwaukee.

Carl von Ossietzky in Esterwegen concentration camp (1934).

Albert Einstein and Thomas Mann endorsed Carl von Ossietzky for the Nobel Peace Prize. Ossietzky had been imprisoned in the Esterwegen concentration camp since February 1934

A new Popeye.
