The Battle of Guadalajara began.

The steamship Mar Cantabrico, carrying war materiel from the United States to the Spanish Republic, was intercepted in the Bay of Biscay by the Nationalists who shot 26 members of the crew.

Here’s what else was happening 80-years-ago today.

 

A man lies in a bed with his left leg raised by a pulley.
After breaking his leg, Morenz was unable to move from his hospital bed.

In a National Hockey League game between the Montreal Canadiens and Chicago Black Hawks, Canadiens star Howie Morenz caught his skate in the boards and broke four bones in his leg. Morenz was hospitalized and would die five weeks later from a blood clot

 

 

 

The Great Ohio River Flood continues the  river crested in Huntington nearly 20 feet above flood stage.

Nobody living between Huntington and Parkersburg had ever seen anything like the 1937 flood, which was brought on by melting snow and 19 straight days of rain.
