The Duke of Windsor and his wife met Adolf Hitler at the Berghof. As they departed Hitler made the Nazi salute, which the Duke returned.

Riots broke out in Khemisset, French Morocco when nationalists demanding political reforms clashed with police.

The historical film Conquest starring Greta Garbo and Charles Boyer was released.

Here’s what else was happening 80-years-ago today.

A man lies in a bed with his left leg raised by a pulley. — After breaking his leg, Morenz was unable to move from his hospital bed.

In a National Hockey League game between the Montreal Canadiens and Chicago Black Hawks, Canadiens star Howie Morenz caught his skate in the boards and broke four bones in his leg. Morenz was hospitalized and would die five weeks later from a blood clot

The Great Ohio River Flood continues the river crested in Huntington nearly 20 feet above flood stage.

Nobody living between Huntington and Parkersburg had ever seen anything like the 1937 flood, which was brought on by melting snow and 19 straight days of rain.

Exams are over – Went to see Pete and Velma and get the waffle iron. Pete is looking so much better! We went to see “One in a Million” with the Olympic champion Sonja Henie. She skates and dances One in a Million Poster beautifully. Lorene and I stayed to see it twice. I could easily go again! A letter from Carsey says he will be here the week-end of the 29th but he cant make it here this week-end to see the picture – Nevertheless I’ve had a silly feeling ever since the letter came that he would be here. Even though he has an appointment with some truckers on Saturday! How foolish of me – and my mind tells me he won’t be here! Instead he called me about 8 and said he’d be over about noon tomorrow!!!

Here’s what else was happening 80-years-ago today.

41,000 people around Cincinnati were left homeless by the Ohio River flood. The business district of Pittsburgh and part of Louisville, Kentucky were also flooded out.

Walt Disney received the National Distinguished Service Award of the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce at a banquet at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

Here’s what else was happening 80-years-ago today

Luckily no one was injured in what is considered one of the worst train wrecks which occurred at Hemphill in McDowell County West Virginia. Train traffic was tied up for two days.
