(This is an entry from the journal entitled “Mexico Summer” written by Elizabeth Whipple Lancaster Carsey 80-years-ago)
He called in the morning to say that he had a ride home with Charlie Reeves. Later to say goodbye for they were starting immediately. One way to get out of coming up to the house, anyway! I was disappointed because he had said he would go shopping with us for Alfrey’s watch and guaraches for Jaime. I bought a watch for 58 pesos and a tooled-leather book cover. Carsey would like on but I think this will be for Jaime – bought a blue vase for Mrs. Ruiz. In the afternoon Betty and I visited Chapultepec Castle.
Left at 8:15 for Juarez. Jose Alvarez and his wife (Mrs. Ruiz’ newly married brother) spend the day at the Ruiz’s.
Here’s what else was happening 80-years-ago today:
Representatives of France, Great Britain and Italy met in Paris to negotiate a solution to the Abyssinia Crisis.
Haile Selassie offered new economic concessions to Italy, stressing he would not accept a military occupation but would grant facilities for mining, road construction and railway operations
