President Franklin D. Roosevelt met with six state governors, including rival presidential candidate Alf Landon, at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines to discuss government actions in response to the drought.

Here’s what else was happening 80-years-ago today:

The sixteen convicted Soviet conspirators were executed by firing squad. From exile in Norway, Leon Trotsky declared it was his duty to avenge “one of the greatest crimes in the world’s history.

 

Image result for august 25, 1936 radioRadio signals on the entire coast of South America faded out between 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM.  This includes airplane communication radios.  Some reports indicate that the fade-out was also experienced from New York to Honolulu.

Irene Nixon called and came by. She has been in U.S. since February – Virginia Joyner was with her, from San Antonio.  Cecilia Faulks sent her regards. Dit N Harold wet out for dinner. Jaime n I went for a ride with Heinzels and played Bridge. Jaime goes on to 11 to 7 shift tonight.  First change in 6 weeks. Reading “Hasta la Vista” by Christopher Morley –  story of his boat trip to Peru.  Got out Bernal Diaz’s story of the Conquest of Mexico but it is too detailed for too much reading.

Here’s what else was happening 80-years-ago today:

The show trial of 16 leaders of the Polish wartime underground movement (including the Home Army and civil authorities) convicted of “drawing up plans for military action against the U.S.S.R.”, Moscow, June 1945. All of them had been invited to help organize the new “Polish Government of National Unity” in March 1945 and were subsequently captured by the NKVD.

The Trial of the Sixteen ended with all the defendants sentenced to death by firing squad.

President of the Republic of Spain Manuel Azaña is on the cover of this week’s Time Magazine along with General Francisco Franco and General Emilio Mola

Have a ride with Mr. Moore (Payton Meat Co.) to Van Horn this afternoon. Am reading ‘Goya” by Schneider – Rather like it.  Finished ‘Winding Lane’ by Phillip Gibbs and A Story of Henry VIII ‘The King Rides’ or something like that, last week.  Have discovered I like P.E. Wadehouse better than Benchley as a steady diet.  Got home about 6 p.m. The family was expecting me on the train – Fooled ’em!

Jesse Owens wins the 100 meter dash in front of Adolph Hitler. This was  his first gold medal of the Berlin Olympics, and he equaled the world record of 10.3 seconds

Jesse Owens breaks the 100m tape to win the first of his four gold medals at the Berlin Olympics.

U.S. Secretary of State Cordell Hull said at a press conference that the government would do all it could to evacuate Americans still in Spain who wanted to leave, but warned that conditions may develop which would make it no longer possible for American ships to reach them
