(This is an entry from the journal entitled “Mexico Summer” written by Elizabeth Whipple Lancaster Carsey 80-years-ago)

Went to see “Smilin’ Through” with Norma Sherer and Frederic March – Very sweet and sad!  Quite a few snifflers in the audience and I would have been one but I knew what was coming in the story and called up the old self control!

Here’s what else was happening 80-years-ago today:

2,500 died in Haiti from floods caused by the Jérémie hurricane.

British Parliament was dissolved and a general election called for November 14.

The underground miners’ strike ended in South Wales.

A new Popeye.
