(This is an entry from the journal entitled “Mexico Summer” written by Elizabeth Whipple Lancaster Carsey 80-years-ago)
A letter from Carsey – as Mrs. Ruiz says “Sabe que todania esta vivo” ( I know today he is alive) He won’t be back until today or tomorrow! Three weeks – long time! I am surely glad to hear from him though I was certain he could come back “home” in a shorter length of time! Went to the glass factory at Carretons #5 – Didn’t find anything to our liking at our price so we returned empty-handed. Porfirio Gonzalez called at noon to tell me that he was exceptionally busy! and didn’t know when he could ask for a date but that he was going to call every noon-day! He has the biggest line I’ve heard in a long time. Regular flatterer too!
Here’s what else was happening 80-years-ago today:
In Hollywood, California Dr. Ralph Willard, a doctor who came from the state of Georgia in Russia, has successfully frozen a monkey named Jekal and brought it back to life. The doctor has also frozen guinea pigs and resuscitated them. However, when he wanted to experiment on dogs howls of protest came from humane societies.
In Europe, riots broke out in the French cities of Paris, Le Havre and Brest in protest of government economic measures. The mayor of the German spa town of Bad Tölz ordered all Jews to leave within 24 hours. A Jewish owned-hotel was closed by police to “protect it”. Italy called 75,000 more men to arms.
