The Augusta National Invitation Tournament, later known as “The Masters“, kicks off in Augusta, GA.  The Gallup N.M. Sheriff is killed in a gunfight between law enforcement and the unemployed.  The episode was the subject of author Gary Stuart’s historic novel, The Gallup 14
