(This is an entry from the journal entitled Mexico Summer written by Elizabeth Lancaster Carsey 80-years-ago. Click here to read more)
School again – not as bad! I had a Christmas card from the Ruiz-es. Had a picture in silhouette almost of Tepoztlan, Mexico -Surely was thrilled to know they had not forgotten me – Almost forgot! Carsey had a birthday while I was away and I never once thought to wish him a happy one! Maybe I’ll tell him the next letter – whenever that is – Said he would send “La Mendicidad en Mexico” too but I’ll believe that when I see it! Found I had overdrawn in the bank of $2! Such is life. After a perfect week-end there would be something to spoil it. My neck feels as though a gland is swollen.
($2 in 1935 is = to $34.78 today.)
Here’s what else was happening 80-years-ago today:
The ”trial of the century” begins. Bruno Hauptmann, an illegal German immigrant and former German soldier in World War I, was accused of kidnapping and murdering 20 month-old Charles Lindberg Jr. aka the Lindberg baby after receiving a ransom of $50,000 in 1932.
