I was lucky enough to be a part of my Grandmother Elizabeth Carsey's last 40 years. We played countless card games, read books, played dress-up and many other games at her house. My family spent almost every holiday with her and Grandpa (until his death in 1985.) She was loved by the entire neighborhood and was often referred to as the Neighborhood Grandma. I held a special pride in the fact that I could call her mine!
Through her simplicity, she taught me the basics of life and the things which make you happy. Love your family, your church and music. The only thing worth crying over is beautiful music. And above all else, approach life with a sense of humor. I have done my best to live up to her expectations and pass those lessons onto my children.

Met Betty. She had been in El Paso since Friday! Had money changed. Had to get tourist card at the Immigration Office at the bridge – Bought tickets second class to Chihuahua – Fairly comfortable – much more so than I had expected – until about 10 when the bugs came out! Arrived Chihuahua at eleven – Peg and Thomas met us.

Dress of seersucker finished, also lining to blue collar coat – Got money and prepared to leave – Decide to go Sunday noon, not Monday morning because trains are so late.

Letter from Mahota at last! Marjie married Bill Pickle. She and I would sit at lunch and discuss alternately Diantha and Harold or Marjie and Bill! Ty-Ty went to Lobo. Letter from Betty says she has consulted the parents and will wire me if favorable. I had just sent a letter to Mrs. Ruiz saying that I was coming alone. I’ll wait to write again until I have a telegram – Corrected (?) Jo Ben Wheat’s write-up of his trip last summer! Twas rather like a diary. Jonathon went to El Paso today with Mr. Buff. Mary Jo went to Balmorhea. Jaime got invited to lunch with Mr. Neely with two “high-ups” at the Coffee Shop! Was he excited!

Ty-Ty’s birthday – The family gave her a dozen cocktail glasses – In the evening her S.S. class came over with a news dress for her (navy blue silk) ad punch and cake. Everyone liked everything. Letter from Carsey written in the Regis. My cup of joy would be full to overflowing if Betty would decide to go to Mexico with me.
Dear Elizabeth,
This pen is terrible!
I arrived here this morning and inquired about summer school. As you probably already know, summer school will operate in the same manner as it did last year. The Mexican Council at Dallas said the same thing.
Lots of things have changed. The Regis has completely reformed it’s lobby so that one would not recognize it. The monument to the Revolutionary heroes has progressed noticeably and three big hotels are poking their noses in the air.
Had a very nice time coming down A singer was on the train and very anxious to have all the Mexicans sing. He led the whole car with much expression in some songs. They sang ‘Fanalito”, “Las Mananites”, and a bunch of others that I recognized.
Have a magazine in front of me showing droopy palms and a ship in the distance. It is called “El Nocturno en Acapulco”
Hay mas casas – but this pen is ghastly.
Yours,
Carsey

Jonathon came on 5:30 pm bus. He is taller and thinner but looks about the same. He is quite thrilled with DePauw and I am so glad! Dad and I had been over at the skating rink (Loma Vista) just before he came.

Went to Wylies for dinner. Much fried chicken – Rosa Lee came to our house until the noon train came in at 4:05! Virginia and Marjie Dove drove in from Billings, Montana on their way to Florida and Washington D.C. for the summer! Surely was pleasantly surprised. Virginia was D.P.U. graduate in ’31 and Marjie in ’32! Hadn’t seen them since my graduation in ’30! Met Mr. and Mrs. Dove, too.
