About Shanna Vicker

I was lucky enough to be a part of my Grandmother Elizabeth Carsey's last 40 years. We played countless card games, read books, played dress-up and many other games at her house. My family spent almost every holiday with her and Grandpa (until his death in 1985.) She was loved by the entire neighborhood and was often referred to as the Neighborhood Grandma. I held a special pride in the fact that I could call her mine! Through her simplicity, she taught me the basics of life and the things which make you happy. Love your family, your church and music. The only thing worth crying over is beautiful music. And above all else, approach life with a sense of humor. I have done my best to live up to her expectations and pass those lessons onto my children.

First day of classes not bad.  About as crowded as usual – Not seen the new science teacher and Velma is substituting for the other.  Bought or rather rented a P.O. Box no 197 – Wrote Mrs. Ruiz about her brother and my check.  Mary’s friend came over again and we had a lesson in contract – Betty Johnson was here for that too.

Teacher’s meeting at 9 with the same sort of talk that teachers have always heard. Earnest Harp takes Mr. Corum’s place at Sr. High and Miller takes Earnest’s.  Don’t know who takes Miller’s or Hubbard’s – Hope they are nice and unmarried. Ate lunch at Mrs. Martens but went back to school in the afternoon.   Saw Leanore Shafer, Harriet Poorbaugh, and Charlotte St. John and heard some gossip.  Harriet had been in Chicago, Charlotte in New York and Boston and Leonore at Pine Lodge.  Met a friend of Mary Owensby who lives in Charlotte’s old room and he took us to Kipling’s for drinks.

roswell jr hi

Left Van Horn at 5:25, one hour late, reached Roswell at 12 per schedule.  Mrs. Grady was glad to see me by the hug and kiss I got!  Arranged for payments at ban, shopped and visited Velma.  Later saw Mrs. Burdette and stayed there for supper.  Morris’ are sweet as ever.  He is pale but looked well in a tan suit and shoes to match.  “Shorty” Miller is married and Art Corum and Hubbard have work in the Educ. end of the C.C.C work I hear.  Hazel Smith has a job in Central or South America.  (Lucky Girl!)  Alyce Claire hasn’t come yet. A note from Mrs. Wilmot asks me to talk to the class about Mexico tomorrow.  Mrs. Elmore has had the organ all summer so I may not have it this year! Remains to be seen!  Saw Pauline Regensburg and Lavora Hedrick-

Last night there was a “Black and White” Ball at the Churubusco Country Club, I suppose.  Surely would have liked to have been there.   Letter from Dad yesterday.  Went to Baptist Church and heard a nice young preacher with black hair in a white suit with a blue tie.  Rather good – looking – Missionary Meeting heard me explain some pictures of Mexico that I have.  Saw Jaime’s “Esquire”
