About Shanna Vicker

I was lucky enough to be a part of my Grandmother Elizabeth Carsey's last 40 years. We played countless card games, read books, played dress-up and many other games at her house. My family spent almost every holiday with her and Grandpa (until his death in 1985.) She was loved by the entire neighborhood and was often referred to as the Neighborhood Grandma. I held a special pride in the fact that I could call her mine! Through her simplicity, she taught me the basics of life and the things which make you happy. Love your family, your church and music. The only thing worth crying over is beautiful music. And above all else, approach life with a sense of humor. I have done my best to live up to her expectations and pass those lessons onto my children.

diary 2Heard Roswell Choral Club in recital of Sacred Numbers! Excellent!  I sat with Mr. Martens – Went to Lee’s (Hendrick) Hamburger stand for good hamburgers and cherry Root Beer! Trains scheduled changed.

Haile Selassie gave a written statement to journalists explaining that he and his family fled Ethiopia because their death or imprisonment would not have served the interests of the people. “Upon consulting our nobles, it was agreed that we could best serve the interests of our people by going abroad so that we might freely pursue our efforts to safeguard the independence of Ethiopia”, the statement read.

Manuel Azaña became the new President of Spain.

Benito Mussolini announced the annexation of Ethiopia and proclaimed Italian East Africa in a triumphant speech from the balcony of the Palazzo Venezia. He declared a resurgent Roman empire and asked the assembled crowd, “Will you be worthy of it?” The crowd answered with a cry of “Si!”

Police in Thessaloniki fired on a crowd staging a general strike against the government of Ioannis Metaxas. 30 were killed and hundreds wounded.

The Hindenburg dumps water before landing in Lakehurst, New Jersey

The Hindenburg arrived at Lakehurst, New Jersey in a record time of 61 hours and 39 minutes

diary 2Today is an important day.  First I got a contract which raised my salary to $1200 – $50 raise! Am I ever on air!  Then my Assembly program for the year was given.  The first play “Sauce for the Goslings” wasn’t well given – no one could hear them. But “His First Shave” went over with a bang!  At 3:15 my home room went on a picnic to the Bottomless Lakes – some went in swimming but it was a rather cold day – Mrs. Spurlock and Mrs. Hoffman took cars and I went in Bob Ullrich’s – Good time.

Jockey Ralph Neves was thrown from his horse at Bay Meadows Racetrack in San Mateo, California and pronounced dead at the scene. His apparently dead body was taken away, but a doctor revived him with a shot of adrenaline. A famous headline in the next day’s San Francisco Examiner read, “Neves, Called Dead in Fall, Denies It.”

Here’s what else was happening 80-years-ago today

Amy Johnson reclaimed her England-to-South Africa flight record when she landed her Percival Gull Six at Cape Town 3 days, 6 hours and 29 minutes after leaving Kent.

At dawn in Washington, D.C. it was discovered that someone had hoisted the flag of the Soviet Union on the flagpole of the United States Supreme Court Building overnight, and had knotted the halyard so well that it could not be hauled down. At the base of the flagpole a copy of The Harvard Lampoon was found, indicating the work of a prankster. Police called in the fire department, who extended a ladder up to the flag and burned it.

diary 2Saw Mrs. Martens for P.T.A. tomorrow.   We discussed my going into interpreting then saw Mrs. Noah. She gave  Alyce Claire a lesson on the sax.  Almost persuaded me to a trombone

Had to go to Junior Dept. to talk on Mexico during S.S. hour. Played for church.  Bernard came by to go to Band Concert in which Rev Hempstead and Veronica Rhea sang the “Minere” Rode around until time for Junior League at 5:30.  Told them of the Pyramids and the Festival there.  Got a sandwichat Mosely’s and back to church.  After taking Mrs. Johnston home we went to Velma’s. It rained a trifle. Met her sister Vera from near Clovis.  Pete, Velma, B and I rode around in the rain.   I saw a lot of country today!  Lovely day all around

April has gone!  Slept late today. Paid some bills and practiced for tomorrow.  Saw Margaret Douglas but I can’t remember her name now.  She has gained 20 pounds since I saw her last.  I guess that was in Tucumcari. Washed.
