About Shanna Vicker

I was lucky enough to be a part of my Grandmother Elizabeth Carsey's last 40 years. We played countless card games, read books, played dress-up and many other games at her house. My family spent almost every holiday with her and Grandpa (until his death in 1985.) She was loved by the entire neighborhood and was often referred to as the Neighborhood Grandma. I held a special pride in the fact that I could call her mine! Through her simplicity, she taught me the basics of life and the things which make you happy. Love your family, your church and music. The only thing worth crying over is beautiful music. And above all else, approach life with a sense of humor. I have done my best to live up to her expectations and pass those lessons onto my children.

Letters from Pete and Mrs. O.B. Such grand ones, telling of the good times they are having! Pete asks me for a date to the next Teachers’ Meeting Dance and sooner, he says, if we are in the same place this summer!  He and May seem to think my dancing has improved!  Well, practice makes perfect!  Date with Bernard tonight to the C. of C. Banquet and it was a thoroughly enjoyable affair.  Good food and really interesting talks – went to the show afterwards.

The White Parade (1934) PosterSchool again – Alyce Claire didn’t come yesterday. I had a letter that her Aunt had died and she would be back today. It is now 9:15 and no Alyce Claire yet.  Mrs. Hubbard substituted for her.  The school was cold.  My room did not get up to 68 degrees until about 2:30!  Wore my coat nearly all day.  Bernard called about a date to C of C dinner tomorrow night but I don’t know.  Went to see “White Parade” by myself tonight  – Very Good! Feeling blue tonight – Probably won’t get my weekly letter from home either this time – Wrote to First National Bank in Gallup about my dividend – Hope to hear soon!

Sunday School and church.  Dad preached a good sermon. Ate dinner and Carsey was our guest.  Left right after dinner for Carlsbad.  On the way we stopped once for them to shoot quail but they did not get one (’twas out of season?! and they had no license!) Arrived in Carlsbad at 5:30 (4:30 N.M. time) Time only for a cup of coffee before I took the bus. Saw them to wave to after we had left the bus station.  Bus was crowded by the time we left Artesia. Got into Roswell about 7:30 and there was Bernard! Was glad to see him – Was tired when I reached Roswell.  He took me to supper and then home. I want to do nothing but crawl in bed but I guess I’ll write home. Thanksgiving Day we sent a telegram to Jonathon – Diantha didn’t get home either!  Surely did hate to leave them at Carlsbad – They were probably to embarrassed (or cold!) to say much but I felt rather put off!  Shouldn’t think it, I guess, but I was tired and it hurt a little.

Nan Jones Mitchell got me out of bed about 9:30.  She stayed until 11:00. Worked on blouses.  That night I had a date with Carsey and Jamie with Aletha Sockwell (Mrs. Breedlove’s sister) to eat an enchilada supper and go to the show. The Scarlet Empress (1934) Poster  Saw Marlene Dietrich in ” The Scarlet Empress” Settings all right but not enough story – Afterwards we played Bridge at the Hotel but I am afraid I was a drawback to Carsey’s natural good playing.  I really am no player – I invited him to go with Jamie and me to Carlsbad on Sunday when I left – and so did Jamie.

Went to town with Dad and saw Nan Jones Mitchell at the Captain Hotel.  Had a cup of coffee with Carsey while he ate breakfast.  Went to Wheat’s and weighed – Only 119!  I think her scales are naturally light.  We invited Joe Ben and his date DeLynn Fancher, Mrs. Wheat, Ellis, Irene and Mrs. Monk and Dorothy and Mr. Carsey over for “42” and Horoscopes.  Irene was sick but all of the others came.   Nice evening filled with Mahatma Gandhi (?), spinach, boiled eggs, and sand: and Sauscrit!! A little Forty Two was played by turning the dominoes out!  The last of the pineapple cake I took home, went that evening.

Full day!   School all day. Teachers’ meeting until 5:10!  Found out that we get two days vacation for Thanksgiving and perhaps three-weekends for Christmas!  Grand news!  Went to a choir meeting of membership committee. Bernard brought me back in time to go to Hazel Hanson’s announcement Bridge party at 7:30.  The Sixtette sang several numbers. Cute Santa Claus heads (ice cream with red hots for eyes, nose and mouth) and cream cone for hat!  Home at 11:30 or little after – Mrs. Dr. Connor gave two readings enjoyed by everyone.
