About Shanna Vicker

I was lucky enough to be a part of my Grandmother Elizabeth Carsey's last 40 years. We played countless card games, read books, played dress-up and many other games at her house. My family spent almost every holiday with her and Grandpa (until his death in 1985.) She was loved by the entire neighborhood and was often referred to as the Neighborhood Grandma. I held a special pride in the fact that I could call her mine! Through her simplicity, she taught me the basics of life and the things which make you happy. Love your family, your church and music. The only thing worth crying over is beautiful music. And above all else, approach life with a sense of humor. I have done my best to live up to her expectations and pass those lessons onto my children.

Ground Hog surely saw his shadow because there has ever been a more perfect day so far as the weather is concerned. Practiced some and rode in the afternoon with Edvina and Mrs. Johnston.  Met Miss Lucy Lee who lives across the street from me on Fourth.  Quite alive, she is! Rode to the Bottomless Lakes and saw what is evidently the keeper’s house – Quite attractive. Might be worth being keeper for!  Bernard and I went to Dwight’s and Velma’s for more Hearts.  Velma and Pete have been gone to Melrose all week. He has had one of his moody spells.  Dwight says he threatened to commit suicide, and Bernard says if he did it wouldn’t be the first time!  What a life for Velma!

Saw Alyce Clair and Betty Johnston off to Tatum this afternoon. I couldn’t get anyone to take the organ for Sunday so I stayed – am quite lost up here all by myself.   Charlotte always goes home on Friday – Got a complimentary ticket for “David Copperfield”! Pretty Good!

Letter from Ty-Ty.  Another discourse on marriage, reciting the case of young Dr. Carsey!  Poor Boy! Says the last flowers I sent had on the card “from Elizabeth and Bernard Johnston”!  She wisely requests both surnames or none, and I didn’t know he had anything to do with sending the until tonight – Last night I went to President’s Ball with Dwight and Velma Glover, her sister and husband. Good time.  Dwight made us each a corsage.  Maybe I’d like to go with a greenhouse man!  As a result of going to bed late, I am grouchy today.  Tried not to be and succeeded pretty well until tonight at choir practice.  I tried to get Miss Perry to take the organ Sunday as I could go to Tatum. She had other plans – everything went wrong after that.  I perhaps talked unnecessarily to Mrs. Burdette and then I blew up to Mr. Akin because I had nothing against him and he is a good listener.  Maybe I’ll have to stay here anyway this week-end and I guess it won’t kill me. Letter from Jonathon this afternoon asking for my Indian ring!  Guess I’ll break down and send it to him!

Short letter from Carsey saying how much I had enjoyed “Faust” He saw”David Copperfield” too and liked them both.   Surely am glad he has the chance – I guess he and Jaime saw “Il Trovatore” last night.

Best day at school in a long time. Really feel like I am accomplishing a little something.  Bernard ate with me and Alyce Claire at Mrs. Grady’s.  B and I went immediately to see “Country Chairman” with Will Rogers. He brought me home and went to work awhile!

Wonder of Wonders!  Bernard came to morning, afternoon and evening services!  First time for him to hear the Bishop and he enjoyed him too.  Between the afternoon and evening service, Bernard and I took Pauline home. Nice drive.  After church Bernard and I went to Dwight and Velma’s .  Played Hearts and Casino  – Had good time. Dwight may go away on CCC work. Not sure yet.  Ordered Flowers for Ty-Ty sent to Carup’s Hospital at Pecos.

Pauline came to stay all night, went to church with me.  I have played every night except Monday – Wrote to Ty-Ty about going to see her but I couldn’t make it. Missed that and the operas, too.  Glad to have Pauline.  Seemed like old times with Jeanette.

Dr. Allan Ray Dafoe  (following article) delivered and cared for the babies their first year.  These were some of the first pictures released to media.
