About Shanna Vicker

I was lucky enough to be a part of my Grandmother Elizabeth Carsey's last 40 years. We played countless card games, read books, played dress-up and many other games at her house. My family spent almost every holiday with her and Grandpa (until his death in 1985.) She was loved by the entire neighborhood and was often referred to as the Neighborhood Grandma. I held a special pride in the fact that I could call her mine! Through her simplicity, she taught me the basics of life and the things which make you happy. Love your family, your church and music. The only thing worth crying over is beautiful music. And above all else, approach life with a sense of humor. I have done my best to live up to her expectations and pass those lessons onto my children.

Had planned a dinner party at Dwight’s for Velma and Thelma’s birthday but Dwight had the flu so Bernard and I ate at the Cafeteria.  I went to Pete’s and Velma’s until he sent a telegram and worked a little (very little, I think!)  Got a Kodak picture of Pete and Velma.  Mrs. Martens for lunch.

Took “In a Monastery Garden” and “In Luxembourg Gardens” to the church to practice.  Ate lunch with Burdettes.  She had some advice to give about getting married!!! A headache prevented my seeing a wrestling match at the Institute or spending the night with Mrs. Leroy Brown!  Bernard called – He can say the most tactless things!!

Two cards from Ty-Ty – one written Friday from Pecos (Jan 31st?) And one from Van Horn mailed Feb 4 getting here the same day! Don’t understand.  Dreamed last night of Carsey – probably means I won’t hear from him again!   Heard from Mexico City – the U! sending me information of accommodations under way to take care of foreign women students for $5.00 for the whole year!  That included board and room, tuition, books etc!  Sounds pretty good!

David Copperfield (1935) PosterFound out Dwight sent me the bouquet in appreciation of my work with the chorus! Was I ever surprised! Took part of them to school.  Still no word from home. Plan to go to “David Copperfield” tonight – The show was very good! Rather longer than most but I’d never notice it if it hadn’t been that we had to see the first part later.  Came in just where he was going to meet his step-father – But contrary to everyone else, I didn’t shed a tear!  I went with Mary, Virginia, and Mrs. Burdette.

Miriam Hopkins

grandma carseyStill no letter from home – Don’t know whether Ty-Ty went home last week-end or not.  Went to see “The Richest Girl in the World” with Miriam Hopkins who people say I resemble! Impossible! When I got home there was a lovely bouquet of sweet peas, roses and I guess some kind of lilies! I’m satisfied that Dwight bought them but who sent them, I still don’t know!

I love surprises and bouquets even more!

Only a fair crowd in the morning – and a poor one in the evening! Ate dinner with Johnston’s and Edvina and I rode in the gorgeous sunshine until I had to play for Men’s Chorus at 4.  After church Bernard and I went to Bess and Prentice White’s house and played Hearts!
