Here’s what else was happening 80-year-ago today

In Japan, Sada Abe strangled her lover with an obi and then cut off his genitals to carry around with her as a souvenir. When the crime was discovered the next day it became a national sensation and would be the subject of many books and movies over the decades to follow.

Former U.S. President Herbert Hoover released a written statement asserting that he was not a candidate for president in 1936. “I have rigidly prevented my friends from setting up any organization and from presenting my name in any primary or to any state convention, and not a single delegate from California or any other state is pledged to me”, Hoover declared. “That should end such discussion.”

The U.S. Supreme Court decided Carter v. Carter Coal Co. and Wallace v. Cutten.

The German cruiser Emden began a controversial 10-day goodwill visit to the city of Baltimore, Maryland, sponsored by local German-American groups. Over 2,000 people marched to protest the cruiser’s arrival, but thousands of other Baltimoreans would wait for hours to take tours of the ship during its stay.

I have put my foot in it, perhaps cooked my goose by writing that letter to C. Hinkle.  I should have written Mr.  Pope (according to  Mr. P) and someone has blabbed to the present Spanish Teachers that I want their jobs!   What a nice fix I’m in. and to top it all, there is a lovely dust storm outside!

The new teacher is here to take Mr. Sprinkle’s place .  A Mr. Gilbert who might be said to resemble Carsey in a seedy vague sort of way.  He majored in Geology & graduated about 10-years-ago but looks as though he was just out.   Read more of “While Rome Burns” Quite Good-

Anthony Eden addressed the House of Commons for the first time as Foreign Secretary. He responded to criticism of the League of Nations failing to impose oil sanctions on Italy by explaining that oil was “a sanction like any other and must be judged by the same criterion, whether its imposition will help stop the war.

 

 

In the final week of February a thaw finally came to the nation. Temperatures rose above freezing for the first time in up to eleven weeks

Saw ” A Tale of Two Cities” with Ronald Coleman and Elizabeth Allen. Very well done, exceptional picture. Used Edith Spurlock’s gift pass and it surely was a grand Christmas present – even so late in the day.   Fixed grades in permanent record sheets

Alyce Claire got back from Tatum just in time for school. Letter from Ty-Ty says Dit thinks I am going to be an auntie!  Ojala! say I! She suggests Laredo as a good place for me to work with Spanish. Ty-Ty plans to go home today.  Gave Lorenzo Burciaga a test for  Merit badge in interpreting (Spanish).  Mary has a cold and has stayed in bed all day. I wish this were  next week so exams would be all over with and new work started.  Broke crystal of my watch yesterday so I took it down to Mr. Bullock to have it fixed – Nothing infuriates me more –
